Pokemon Red and Blue Walkthrough

Safari Zone

The Safari Zone is a refuge for wild Pokemon. There are even a few rare Pokemon on display at the front of the building. Read the signs to add them to your Pokedex under seen, but not caught. Enter the building at the north side of Fuchsia City to reach the entrance. According to the main sign, this is where you play the Safari Game, Pokemon-U-Catch!

The game says for P500, you can catch all the Pokemon you want. Once the time runs out, they’ll call you on the intercom. In reality, for P500 you can catch up to 30 Pokemon with the 30 Safari Balls they give you. The time is measured in steps you take. You have 500 steps before your time runs out. To save time, stand within the tall grass and move slightly without actually taking a step. You can also surf and fish.

Catching Pokemon in the Safari Zone is completely different from everywhere else. You will not be able to use your Pokemon during battle, and all wild Pokemon can flee at any time. Once a wild Pokemon has been encountered, you’ll have the option to throw bait, throw a rock, throw a Safari Ball, or run.

The entrance to the Safari Zone is very simplistic. There’s a rest house, like each section, but nothing of interest inside. The only place to go on foot is eastward to Safari Zone – East. Later when you learn Surf and earn the Soul Badge, you can surf on a Pokemon to access the north and west sides of the Safari Zone. Directly in the middle of this body of water is a Nugget.

The east side of the Safari Zone has a few different species of Pokemon on land, but not in the water. Make your way through the grass to the east, then walk up the small hill to the north. A Carbos can be found on this hill.

Walk down the hill to the west to reach more of Safari Zone – East. A Max Potion can be found near the trees to the northwest, and TM37 can be found on a small peninsula to the east. TM37 is Egg Bomb. It’s a physical attack that only a handful of Pokemon can learn.

Climb up the hill to the north to get around the large tree to the east. A Full Restore is left of the rest house. Exit out of this area through the northwest. This will take you to the northern section.

Once again, the Pokemon that appear on land will be different from the other sections, but the Pokemon in the water will be the same.

You will enter this area from the southeast. The first exit to the west will lead back to the entrance. The next two exits further west will lead to the final area of the Safari Zone. Walk westward until you reach the first patch of tall grass. Climb up and over the hill to the west to reach the middle of this area.

Walk as far north as you can and you’ll find TM40 Skull Bash a short distance to the east. This is a normal-type physical attack that takes two turns to use. Continue east, then north, and west to find a Protein. Finally, go all the way west and south to reach the east side of the Safari Zone.

Once again, the Pokemon that appear on land will be different from the other sections, but the Pokemon in the water will be the same.

Follow the path southward to find a pair of Gold Teeth. These are the Warden’s teeth! Return them to the Warden back in Fuchsia City. Walk a short distance west to find TM32 Double Team. This move increases the user’s evasion, making them harder to hit.

The house to the north isn’t actually a rest house, it’s a secret house! Go inside and speak with the person to receive HM03 Surf. This is a powerful water-type attack in-battle. Once you earn the Soul Badge, you can surf on a Pokemon’s back across bodies of water.

Hopefully you can surf now across the small body of water to the south. A Max Potion can be found within the patch of tall grass. Climb over the hill to the east to find a Max Revive. If you don’t have surf, you’ll have to return back to the northern area. Walk around to the middle of the section and take that exit back to Safari Zone – West. This is the only way to reach the last two items and patch of tall grass on foot.
