Pokemon Red and Blue Walkthrough

Catching Pokemon

The Pokemon franchise revolves around catching Pokemon. Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow have a total of 151 different Pokemon. However, not all are available in a single game.

All trainers start off with a single Pokemon in Pallet Town. You will then come into contact with more around Kanto. They are randomly found in tall grass, within caves, while surfing on water, and fishing in water.

Once you’re thrown into battle with a Pokemon, it’s best to weaken the Pokemon by attacking. Lower its health gauge before throwing a Poke Ball from your inventory. You can increase your chances of capturing a Pokemon by using better Poke Balls or by inflicting Status Conditions like Sleep and Paralysis. Sleep is always the best option. Make note: You cannot capture another trainer’s Pokemon, only Pokemon found in the wild.

Only six Pokemon can be held at a time. If anymore are captured, they will automatically be sent to the Pokemon storage system, which can be accessed via PC at each Pokemon Center. In generation one, only twenty Pokemon can be held per box. Change boxes when you think you’re running low on space or you won’t be able to capture anymore Pokemon!

Training Pokemon

After capturing a Pokemon, you can add up to six in your party. Use them in battle to gain experience. Cause the opponent’s Pokemon or a wild Pokemon to faint to earn experience. An easy way to train a low-leveled Pokemon is to throw it into battle first, then switch to a stronger Pokemon. Both Pokemon that participated in battle will receive the same amount of experience points.

Gain enough experience points to level up, learn new moves, and acquire better stats. The more Pokemon you battle, the better your Pokemon’s stats will be. That’s why a trained Pokemon is always stronger than a newly captured wild Pokemon.

Evolution

Some Pokemon will evolve upon reaching a certain level. Evolution changes a Pokemon’s appearance, increases its stats, and sometimes allows it to learn moves it wouldn’t be able to obtain in its previous form. Evolution through leveling up can be canceled by pressing B.

Other Pokemon can evolve by using certain stones found or bought in-game, and a handful of Pokemon evolve only after trading to another Pokemon Trainer who owns Red, Blue, or Yellow.
