Pokemon Red and Blue Walkthrough

Saffron City Pokemon Gym

After defeating Team Rocket at the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town, the infamous gang should have moved their guards from the front of the city’s gym. Inside are the very powerful psychic-type Pokemon! To navigate around you’ll have to step on the different warp tiles. If you want to try and battle every Trainer, just keep going up and down on the warp tiles. However, if you want to reach the Gym Leader in as quickly as possible, follow the steps below.

Saffron City Gym Leader: Sabrina

Like the rest of the gym, Sabrina specializes in the psychic-type. Three of her four Pokemon are psychic-types, and all can use psychic attacks. In generation one, psychic-types are one of the strongest in the game; the only element stronger is bug, and there are very few bug-type moves. Use your best physical attacks and inflict status conditions to gain the upper hand. Sabrina’s Pokemon have high special stats, so stick to physical elements: Normal, Ground, Flying, Rock, Bug, and Poison.

Keep an eye out for Sabrina’s defense buffs. Mr. Mime will try to use barrier, which increases the user’s defense by two stages; and Alakazam will try to use reflect, which reduces damage from physical attacks by 50%! Try to knock them out quickly, or use a Pokemon with Haze (if available) to eliminate any stat changes.

Do not use ghost-type attacks because psychic-types are immune to them. Avoid poison and fighting-type Pokemon, as well, as they are often taken out with a single psychic attack.

Defeat Sabrina to earn the Marsh Badge and TM46 Psywave. This attack inflicts a random amount of damage from 1x to 1.5x the user’s level! The Marsh Badge allows Pokemon up to Level 70 to obey you in battle, even those obtained through trades.
