Pokemon GO Guide

Pokemon Evolution

Evolution is when a Pokemon changes to a new form within their evolutionary line. They will become much more powerful, their type might change, and both of their moves will most likely change. Not all Pokemon can evolve, some evolve once, and some evolve twice!

Pokemon GO introduced Pokemon Candies as the primary item to evolve Pokemon. The candy will be named the base species of the Pokemon. For example, Bulbasaur candy is used to evolve Bulbasaur to Ivysaur and Ivysaur to Venusaur. If a pre-evolution was added in a later generation, the original stage is used as the Pokemon candy’s name. For example, Pikachu candy are used to evolve Pichu to Pikachu and Pikachu to Raichu.

Pokemon that evolve twice often require 25 candies for the first evolution and 100 candies for the second evolution. Pokemon that only evolve once often require 50 candies. Evolutionary items weren’t added for the first generation of Pokemon, but later Pokemon were given items and even special conditions necessary for evolution.

As of January 10, 2020 select Pokemon can now evolve through trades instead of using candies, just like the full-length RPG games. Pokemon candies can still be used for evolution, but up to 400 candies might be needed in some instances!

Information on how to evolve a Pokemon will be in their summary screen under the power up button. However, some Pokemon evolutions in Pokemon GO are still secret, or alternate methods might work! Check the table below to learn of the secret evolutions in Pokemon GO.
