Training with Team Leaders

The three Team Leaders of Pokemon GO can be challenged at any time by clicking the rectangular box at the bottom-right corner of the screen and swiping over to the battle option. The Team Leaders and the type of Pokemon they use is listed in the table below.

After choosing one of the three team leaders, choose one of the three league rules to battle under. There are three leagues, each with their own CP limits. The three Pokemon the Team Leaders use will change depending on the league. Furthermore, although each Trainer is given two shields to protect against charged attacks during each battle, the Team Leaders will not use any shields unless the Pokemon Battle is in the Master League.

How to Battle in Pokemon GO

Three Pokemon are chosen at the start of battle, and no items can be used to heal or revive. Pokemon can be switched out at any time, but they will be attacked while switching out. Tap on the opponent Pokemon to use fast attacks and begin charging up the charged attack(s).

The charged attacks will do the most damage, but will warn the opposing Trainer when selected. Once a charged attack is selected, hit as many Pokemon type (fire, grass, water, etc) icons as possible. The more icons that are hit, the stronger the charged attack will be. The attack will be ranked from Good, to Great, to Excellent.

As one Trainer is performing the charged attack, the other Trainer has a few seconds to decide if they want to use a shield. A shield will completely block the opposing Pokemon’s charged attack; however, only two shields can be used per battle.

It’s best to use a shield to block a super effective attack or an attack that might knock out your Pokemon. Remember, Pokemon have certain types that are stronger or weaker to other types in both attack and defense. Refer to the Type Chart below. Credit to Reddit user Alpha Nation.

Knock out all three opposing Pokemon to win a battle. Both Trainers should receive a random item or stardust after the first three battles each day. The Pokemon that fainted in battle will not need items to be revived or healed in Pokemon Battles with friends.
