Battle items are, as the name implies, items that can only be used in battle. While in battle, go to your bag to see the option for battle items. Outside of battle, these items can be found in the items section of your bag.
Most of these items will modify the stats of your Pokemon only while they are in battle. If the Pokemon is switched out or when the battle ends, all stat changes will be reverted. Some items will allow you to flee from wild Pokemon.
