Pokmon Sun and Moon will feature a small set of Mega-Evolved Pokemon from generation six. However, they aren’t the highlight of the games anymore. There aren’t even any new mega-evolutions in generation seven at this time.
Through mega evolution, specific Pokemon can transform to Mega Pokemon. This form of evolution only occurs in battle when the Pokemon is holding a special Mega Stone. Once the battle is over, they will revert to their original form.
To initiate a Mega Evolution, each Pokemon must hold their own unique Mega Stone. The stone is always named after the Pokemon, such as Alakazamite. Trainers must also have the Mega Bracelet key item with a mega stone of their own inside..
With both items available, the mega evolution button will become available along with an attack during battle. All Pokemon that choose to mega evolve will mega evolve during that turn, but only one Pokemon per trainer can mega evolve during each battle. A Pokemon’s type and ability may change after this evolution has occurred. When one or both Pokemon have mega evolved, the Pokemon will battle based on the new stats. The Pokemon that has mega evolved will stay in that form until the battle ends, or until they faint. Switching to another Pokemon does not revert its form.
After battle, the Mega-Evolved Pokemon will revert to their original forms. A new form will appear in the “Appearance/Cry” Section of your Pokedex, but a new entry will not be available.
A list of all Mega-Evolutions that appear in Pokemon Sun and Moon will be posted here at a later date.
Primal reversion is a new form of evolution (or maybe even de-evolution) for the two main Legendary Pokemon from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Groudon and Kyogre. Similar to mega evolution, a special item is needed for primal reversion.
These primal reversions follow a different set of rules from mega evolutions. Both Pokemon can revert to their primal forms in a single battle, and a third Pokemon can mega evolve! The effects of their special abilities will not remain on the field if they are called returned to their Poke Ball.
Information on the location of the Red Orb and Blue Orb will be posted here at a later date.
