E3 2015

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) came and went yet again, and boy was it a busy year. Here were some of my favorite announcements.

E3 2015’s conferences took place June 14 through June 16. There were some crazy big announcements, and I felt almost all of the conferences were great — well, except Square Enix and PC’s Game Show. Those two shows were pretty damn boring. I was incredibly busy helping IGN gather all the information they could for Wikis, along with IGN’s staff and two other freelancers. I also started summer semester and had a huge family event. Needless to say, it was a busy week, which is why this blog is so late.

Honestly, I can’t say which conference I liked the most, but I can easily pick out some of my favorite games. Some are still TBA with release dates, but some are set in stone and coming very soon!

E3 started out with the Bethesda conference. Probably the biggest announcement of the show, and the game I’m looking forward to the most, was Fallout 4! I played Fallout 3 and absolutely loved it. The conference had so much information about Fallout 4, including a release date. This is probably the only game I’ll buy on day one since…. probably Skyim in 2011.

The other game I’m looking forward to the most (that actually has a release date) is SOMA. I remember hearing about this a long time ago, but they never had a set release date. It’s by the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Decent, a game which I barely played about a month ago. SOMA definitely looks interesting, and the developers said it’s not a typical hide from the monster game.

Two games that are still a ways off that I’m looking forward to are Mass Effect Andromeda and the Final Fantasy VII Remake. No release dates and very little info, but they’re coming! I honestly think Square Enix barely decided to do Final Fantasy VII Remake after the huge backlash at the PlayStation Experience event when they showed the FFVII PC version for PlayStation 4.

Speaking of remakes, Gears of War is being remade for Xbox One and PC. I’m not really sure I want to get it. If I do, I’ll probably get it for PC. I was wondering why people would want to buy this since the Xbox One is now backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games, but then I found out only a handful of games are backwards compatible at this time, Gears of War not being one of them.

I’m still iffy on Gears 4 and Halo 5. I liked Gears 1 and 2, but Gears 3 and Judgement weren’t all that great. I also loved Halo 1-3, but ODST and 4 weren’t so hot. I’m not sure if I want to commit to these new games.

I probably will not buy the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. It will include zombies, but the multiplayer looks like a rip off of Titanfall with wall running and a thrust double jump.

The prequel or origin story to Mirror’s Edge (entitled Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst) is coming soon and will be open world. I’m definitely looking forward to this game..

I really want to play Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC, but it’s an Xbox timed exclusive. I’ll probably be busy with Fallout 4 and other games during the release, so I can wait for the PC version. I wasn’t a huge Tomb Raider fan in the past, but I loved the reboot of the series.

South Park’s newest game, “The Fractured But Whole,” looks incredibly fun. I barely got around to playing the original South Park game on PC about a month ago, and I thought it was terrific!

And finally, there are two Japanese games I’m looking forward to which have been talked about for years, but have been placed on the back burners time and time again. I’m talking about The Last Guardian and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. It was interesting to see all these people trash talk The Last Guardian once it was re-revealed, saying the game looks boring or stupid. I played Ico and Shadow of the Colossus on PS3, and thought they were really interesting games. I’m definitely looking forward to The Last Guardian on PS4. As for SMT X FE, it looks like a fun JRPG. I guess I’ll have to wait until even more info is revealed, and I really hope it includes Japanese audio!

Before I wrap up this article, I do have to note the most interesting thing about E3 that wasn’t just a game. I’m talking about the Microsoft HoloLens demo! They used this hardware with a new version of Minecraft. I’ve never played Minecraft, nor do I really want to play, but this hardware is incredibly fascinating. When they first started the demo, there was little interest in the crowd. I even said this to my co-workers. However, at the end of the demo everyone was cheering. Just look at the video below!
